CITATION TRACKER GUIDE

How Citation Tracker works

Citation Tracker monitors whether AI systems like ChatGPT cite your domain when users search for keywords relevant to your content. Track your AI visibility over time and measure the impact of your content improvements.

What is Citation Tracker?

Traditional SEO tells you if you rank on Google. Citation Tracker tells you if you get cited by AI. When someone asks ChatGPT "what is the best project management tool?", does it mention your product? Citation Tracker answers that question — automatically, every day.

Getting started

Step 1

Add a Keyword

Click '+ Add Keyword', choose the project (domain) you want to monitor, and type the keyword or question you want to track. Example: "best CRM tools 2025" or "alternative to Notion".

Step 2

Automatic Daily Checks

Every day at 8:00 UTC, GenCite automatically sends that keyword to AI systems and checks if your domain is cited in the response. No action needed on your part.

Step 3

See Your Results

Each keyword shows a citation badge (cited / not cited), the position in the AI response, and a 30-day citation rate. Expand a keyword row to see the full AI response and which URL was cited.

Step 4

Track Trends Over Time

After 2+ days of checks, the Citation Trend chart at the top shows how many citations you received per day over the last 30 days — so you can see if your content improvements are working.

Features & controls

All / Active / Paused filter

Use the toggle at the top right of the keyword list to show all keywords, only active ones, or only paused ones. Active keywords are always sorted to the top.

Pause & Resume

Click the pause icon (⏸) on any keyword to stop daily checks without deleting it. Click the play icon (▶) to resume. Paused keywords stay visible with a 'Paused' badge.

Manual Check

Click the lightning bolt icon (⚡) to run a check on demand at any time, without waiting for the daily cron. Useful after publishing a new article or making content changes.

Position Tracking

When your domain is cited, GenCite records its position in the AI response (e.g. Position #1 = first source mentioned). Lower position numbers mean higher prominence.

Citation Rate

Each keyword shows a 30-day citation rate (%). This is the percentage of checks where your domain appeared in the AI response. A 100% rate means you were cited every time.

Batch Add

Add multiple keywords at once by typing each one on a new line in the Add Keyword dialog. All keywords are added to the same selected project.

Tips for best results

  • Track keywords that match the questions your audience asks AI — not just your brand name.
  • After publishing or updating a page, use the ⚡ manual check to see impact immediately.
  • If citation rate is low, run a Scan on that page from the Scanner and apply the AI suggestions.
  • Use the Paused filter to review keywords you stopped — consider reactivating them after updating the related content.
  • Compare citation rate trends with your scan history to see which optimizations had the biggest impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AI systems does Citation Tracker check?

Currently Citation Tracker queries a representative AI model (GPT-4o-mini via OpenAI) using your keyword as a prompt and checks the response for citations to your domain. We are expanding to cover Perplexity and Google AI Overviews in future updates.

What counts as a 'citation'?

A citation is detected when the AI response includes a URL or domain reference that matches your project's domain. The position is the order in which your domain first appears among all cited sources.

How many keywords can I track?

Business plan users can track up to 25 keywords in total, with a maximum of 10 keywords per project. This limit ensures quality checks for each keyword every day.

When exactly do daily checks run?

Checks run once per day at 8:00 UTC (9:00 AM Lisbon time in winter, 10:00 AM in summer). You can also trigger a manual check at any time using the ⚡ button.

Why is the chart not showing data yet?

The Citation Trend chart requires at least 2 days of check data to draw a meaningful line. On day one you will see a placeholder. After the second daily check, the chart will appear automatically.

Can I delete a keyword?

Yes. Click the trash icon (🗑) on the right side of the keyword row. This permanently removes the keyword and all its check history. Consider pausing instead if you just want to stop checks temporarily.

Is Citation Tracker available on all plans?

Citation Tracker is available exclusively on the Business plan. If you are on Free or Pro, upgrade in Settings > Plan to unlock access.
